Volcanoes

Iceland is located on the Atlantic ridge, where the American and European tectonic plates drift apart. Therefore, there are numerous volcanoes in Iceland. The map shows active zones where volcanic eruptions have occurred or may occur in the future. Each marker represents a volcano that has erupted, once or more often, after Iceland was settled.

The red markers show volcanoes that last erupted after 1900.

The yellow markers show volcanoes that last erupted in 1400-1900.

The blue markers show volcanoes that last erupted in 870-1500.

The latest eruption in Grímsvötn that started on May 21, 2011, is shown with a green marker.
