Swimming pools
Due to the abundance of geothermal hot water, swimming pools are numerous and popular in Iceland. Many Icelanders visit the local pool daily for exercise in the swimming pool and social interaction in the adjacent hot tub. The swimming pools are therefore also cultural establishments.
Most of the pools are outdoors but the water is always comfortably warm and showers are provided for use both before and after entering the pool.
Many families with children travel between pools in their summer vacation. Usually there is a campground nearby. A visit to the pool provides sanitation and recreation. It is a good way to enjoy a sunny day outdoors and to get warm if it is a chilly day.
Rural pools may have limited opening hours, especially in wintertime.
