National parks

There are three national parks in Iceland:

Snæfellsjökull (furthest west). It is dominated by a glacier capped volcano with interesting geological formations.

Þingvellir (35 km east of Reykjavik, UNESCO World Heritage Site). This is where the settlers of Iceland assembled every year for parliament in a unique natural setting, a rift valley between the European and North-American tectonic plates.

Vatnajökull National Park (East Iceland, three disjoint areas and three visitor centers). This is the largest national park in Europe and it provides a unique opportunity to see spectacular consequences of large scale volcanism, erosion and glacier retreat.
